Jack Stokes

Best person statement

I am Jack Stokes, I am the best person for the position of SU President because I have a deep understanding of student’s needs, and I have the experience needed from serving on the SU Leadership Team for 3 years and being a Governor of the college where I have constantly advocated for students and ensured your voices are at the heart of every college decision.

You should vote for me to be your President because I have consistently fought for all students at Dudley and will continue to fight for you with every ounce of determination and passion you deserve.

I have proven I can deliver for students; I campaigned to keep bus passes free for all 16-18 students... and won! I campaigned for a stronger Equality, diversity, and inclusion focus in college...and won! I lobbied to save our buses from cancellation... and won!

Over the years, I have developed the essential skills the president needs such as public speaking, campaigning, and event organising.

I have strengthened students’ collective voice by unifying students across the region by re-establishing the Black Country Students’ Unions. I have gained a strong working relationship with management which will be crucial in securing student victories, and I have represented Dudley on the national stage at the National Union of Students Conferences.

As your SU President, I am committed to serving you with dedication, transparency, and accountability.

Together we will create a better tomorrow.

Statement of intent if elected

My name is Jack Stokes, I've had 3 years of experience on the SU Leadership Team working for you. I am running for the SU Presidency because I believe that a strong and effective Students’ Union is essential to ensuring your voices are heard and your needs are met. As Students’ Union President I will work tirelessly to address the issues students face. Here are the key points I will prioritise if I’m elected:

No.1 Expanding Mental Health welfare provision: Poor Mental health is at an all-time high, affecting everyone in every generation, but students face poor mental health at disproportionate rates. I pledge to tackle this huge issue by campaigning to raise awareness, making mental health services more accessible and lobbying to reduce wait times for counselling. I will fight for more green spaces and lobby to set up a sensory and welfare room for student use. I will work towards destigmatising sexual health and talking about suicide and raise visibility around the issues- we cannot isolate ourselves; we must talk to each other.

No.2 Increasing Diversity and Inclusion: Our college should be a place where everyone is welcome and included, with the world seemingly stepping backwards we must keep marching forwards. I will work with student groups to promote awareness and celebrate diversity on campus. I will also advocate for policies and practices that support inclusivity and promote equity. I will lobby to make Equality, diversity and inclusion training mandatory for all staff to complete so they can be educated and foster a more inclusive classroom. I will lobby for the creation of a gender expression fund because all students deserve the right to be their authentic self.

No.3 Improve all student services: With the college increasingly growing and no investment in student support teams, students are being failed from counselling to career services, it’s time we demand support teams expand with the college, are properly funded and are accessible to all students. Students deserve to access the support they need; the college must do better because students deserve better.

No.4 Reform the Union: I believe all students want a Union where the Student Officers and their decisions are held to account. I’m committing to a more transparent democratic SU, catered towards student needs. I will reform the SU into a more democratic, accountable organisation that openly involves students. I believe the President must be accountable to the student body. Therefore, if elected I’ll be committed to hosting regular ‘drop-in sessions’ with students to allow anyone from our student body to question what their Union and their President are doing for them. I will strive to modernise the Union into a stronger, more efficient organisation, with students at the heart.

As your SU President, I am committed to serving you with dedication, transparency and accountability. Together, we can create a brighter future with meaningful change. I promise to represent you with integrity, and advocate for your interests.
