My name is Helen Lawley, and with much pride, your Students’ Union President for the year 2020/21.
I decided to stand as your President because I am committed that students at Dudley College should have a positive educational experience whatever curriculum they study, their year of study, their personal identity and their needs. This introduction is my commitment to you that I will do my upmost to ensure the Students’ Union (SU) will work hard for you so that we can achieve this for everyone.
I understand that the last few months may have been frustrating for many of you, it has certainly been a year like no other so far and everyone has been pushed to re evaluate many aspects of their life and how they do things. Some of the ideas I initially had when standing for the post of President have had to change too and I am now focused on student well being, mental health and college community as key priority campaign areas for my work moving forward. I’m passionate about creating an environment that is exciting, friendly, accepting and safe and I will need your help to do that.
The SU has a strong and highly esteemed relationship with the College, and a phrase you may commonly hear is ‘learner voice,’ which is our collective voice as learners to ensure our overall college experience is continually improved and everyone can feel equally part of our welcoming college community. Now is a time more than ever that, as a Union, we listen to our students and that you speak up. Using your voice is all the more important in these times, and be reminded that I and other SU representatives are here to listen and represent you.
I want the student community to be assured that the SU are working with the College to ensure that we are continually reacting to the ever-changing situation and will advocate on your behalf.
The Union has a proud and recognised record of campaigning and lobbying leaders on behalf of students, from tackling local college issues such as improved and increased student social space to the reduction in college plastic waste, to tackling national issues that affect students’ lives such as youth unemployment and educational fees.
The SU believe it is a fundamental part of your education that you understand the role you have to play as an active citizen in the college community and wider society and we have lots of opportunities for you to take an active role in making a change and raising awareness regard the issues you and fellow students care about.
We hold annual elections during October for both class representative posts and Union leadership/ management posts. These posts require varying degrees of commitment; they can be challenging but ultimately are very rewarding. I would like to see as many of you as possible be involved in some way. Working with the Union as a volunteer brings a whole host of fantastic opportunities. It’s fun; you’ll make many new friends from a wide range of backgrounds and also gain valuable experience of working with an award winning organisation that is committed to improving the lives of others.
If you would like to make a contribution or just check out what we are up to generally, look out for announcements in class, across MyDay, on social media and MS Teams.
Responding to the social distancing guidelines over the last 6 months the SU have developed a host of online groups for students to join, virtual activities such as quiz nights and online information sharing activities from social media campaigns through to live Q&A’s.

Finally, remember, if you get involved with the Union or any of the many opportunities that exist, the SU can help ‘Make You’. This is your opportunity, your college experience, your life, and I urge you to make the most of it.
I look forward to meeting with you.
